Simple history of the castle

The magnificent Trakai Castle complex built throughout the island became the residence of the dukes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). The Gothic-style castle consisted of a palace built by medieval masters and a donut - a residential tower. These buildings were surrounded by a high, well-constructed, solid defensive wall, beyond which the waters of Lake Galway.
 
The castle lost its political power when the capital of the GDL was moved from Trakai to Vilnius.
